ARTIST STATEMENT
Pottery is humble and sneaks art right
into the kitchen. It is disguised as
familiar, practical objects that, in
actuality, are loaded with references to
art history, and clues from past cultures.
Forms such as the cup, plate, teapot, and
pitcher have been as much a part of the
utilitarian vocabulary as the telephone,
car, or computer is today. The difference
is, functional clay objects have an
emotive quality, a beauty of surface
texture or color that transcends simple
use.
Living in the middle of a busy city has
influenced my work in new ways. The urban
landscape is full of surprising details,
from architecture to discarded roadside
junk. Inspiration can be hiding anywhere -
- in the fender of a classic car, an old
bicycle wheel, or the threaded metal end
of a plumbing pipe. I favor bold geometric
shapes, and graphic color contrast.
Ultimately, I strive for elegance,
refinement, and strength in my work.
