ARTIST STATEMENT

This work represents my obsession with food and the ritual of cooking.  My current interests lie in the explorations of culinary utensils as sculptural objects.  In experimenting with aesthetic elements, I enjoy the humor involved in challenging scale (i.e., oversize spoons and minuscule teapots), as well as form and surface treatment.

I work in a very process-oriented manner, often in multiples.  This helps to keep a gestural quality in the work.  The idea of multiples is important in the finished work as well.  As with the spoons, it moves the objects from the functional realm into the symbolic.  Each spoon becomes an “icon”, in this case representing a person or an experience.

I have always been a hand builder and am greatly influenced by folk art, Mexican folk art in particular.  I find inspiration in the fresh, gestural qualities of their wares as well as the humor and non-functionality of the miniatures.

I hope that some of this humor and spontaneity is carried over into my work.
