ARTIST STATEMENT
I enjoy creating a variety of
sculptural and functional objects,
mainly using animal forms.
I feel a kinship to animals, and
they amuse me.
I can express interactions and emotions
without the stereotypes of gender and
race associated with human forms.
Also, I enjoy the challenge of
mastering the many varieties of form,
texture and color in the animal world.
I use a combination of slab building and
pinching techniques.
I fire each work to cone 01, then
usually raku-fire it.
Sometimes I low-fire it to test
the glaze colors before the raku.
Often, I apply underglazes at the
greenware stage, so I can adjust the
colors after the bisque firing.
The point is, each piece goes
through multiple firings, and sometimes
does not survive the final, rather
risky, raku firing.
One of the characteristics of ceramic
work that is important to me is weight.
I like the elegance of being able
to pick up a ceramic that is light, so
my forms are all hollow.
