ARTIST STATEMENT
The theme of
this series is the Delta and a
particular stretch along the highway
where the landscape took on a strong
directional pattern.
Earth and water and how we
harness these elements that sustain us
are the main subjects.
Also embodied in this work is an
underlying desire to raise our
consciousness about water as a resource,
not a waste product.
The Delta:
two reflections - reflection of
light and imagery, and an evocation of
serious consideration regarding our
diminishing resources.
This work is
also a response to the need to get away
from the formulas of my earlier work and
to come closer to a pure state of
painting, to immediate expression.
My experience of the world is a
tactile one and my hope is that the work
is not only visual but felt through the
skin; a very bright red bush, a warm
color like the warmth of the sun.
Eventually nothing of landscape
remains but a graphic imprint arising
from a few gestures, still retaining the
themes of main concern - water and
earth. The red
bush and the yellow bank become
distilled and appear with minimal
structural representation from which
arises a deeper contemplation of the
forces of life in their absolute
simplicity.
